We priced every sold yearling in the database with a model that was refit without that horse, so its own hammer price couldn't help. Here's how those paper values held up.
The range is built to catch the middle half of prices, and about half land inside it. That's what the range means: a fair spread, not a promise.
The model knows the pedigree, the dam's record and the sale. It can't see the physical, the x-rays or who's in the seats, and those move prices too. When a pedigree is strong enough that buyers routinely go far past it, we mark it "+" and treat the number as a floor.
